Basketball Drills for Beginners

Like many of you, I have a love of sports and in particular enjoy the game of basketball.  Although I played basketball while growing up I never played competitively because I had become a competitive swimmer and swam competitively on my AAU team and received a scholarship to attend college for swimming.

Fast forward, now as a father of a young son, I began by default to coach my son’s recreation team because of his love of the game.  As he continued to demonstrate that he wanted to learn more about the game, we affiliated with a basketball organization that focused on developing players by concentrating on the fundamentals.

As you can guess, I again became involved, although not by default but for the love of the game and the enjoyment of interacting with young people and helping them grow as players.   Consequently, I took on a role as an assistant head coach of third and fourth graders which enabled me to gain hands on experience working within the constructs of the organization.  I continued to increase my skills and knowledge of the game by attending basketball clinics hosted by local universities, reading, and observation.

Today, I still actively coach, but now as a head coach, applying the same principles and have watched my earlier players develop into solid fundamentally sound players playing with confidence and competence.

During the past two seasons the team has achieved a measure of success by winning the 2011 American Youth Basketball Tour Tournament for my fifth grade team  and in 2010 the third and fourth grade team were National Runners-up in the same tournament at Ft. Wayne, Indiana.

Oh, by the way, my son is still playing competitive basketball, although, by mutual consent we agreed that I would not coach him for both of our sakes.
